Space Botany
This is a game in development for GDKO. I'd intended to finish it by the end of the jam, but a super fun crisis at work this past week meant I had no time to work on it. So, instead, I'll share what I do have created and talk a bit about my plans for the game.
What I intended to accomplish
The goal of the game is to discover all of the plants on this new planet and research their uses. All of the plants will be able to be used to accomplish different tasks on the plant and to "unlock" new areas - for example, one type of plant has insulating properties, so once you've discovered that plant and understand its uses, you can venture into the snow biome. An additional mechanic is the need to disturb your environment as little as possible, so stepping on a given tile more than once in a given time period causes it to become damaged. Your exploration is also limited initially by your oxygen meter.
Each plant and biome has unique properties and rules. There are even some old abandoned camps scattered throughout that have hints for how to proceed.
The core game loop will be: use your available oxygen to explore and find plants, and then do research at the end of the day back at camp. Use your botanical advances the next day to get further and discover even more. To win the game, fill out an entire botanical index of plants and their uses for this planet.
What actually got done
All of the art is done (which is the most important part to have completed for this particular jam!). The player is able to traverse the map and explore (using WASD); trees and rocks and bodies of water are not traversable, but plants are. And... that's it. But hey at least it works!
